The Evyngar Brass

Evyngar brassThe memorial brass of Andrew Evyngar who died in 1533 is a magnificent full brass showing his wife and children and set on a replica of Flemish brocade.

The two shields show the Evyngar arms and those of the Salters' Company. Signs of the zealous Puritan destruction of everything that reflected catholic theology and practice can be seen on the desecrated inscription which now reads:

"......of Andrew Evyngar citizen and salter of London and Ellen his....."
Reference to prayer for the dead and the word wife have been obliterated.
